Our eating habits are universally linked to positive memories in our childhood and later phases of life. What we eat in childhood therefore also shapes our later eating habits. Spaghetti as a dish is a prime example of this phenomenon. When someone looks at the spaghetti towers, there is often the same reaction: almost every person inevitably gets an appetite for spaghetti or feels even disgust. The photograph of a spaghetti tower therefore acts as a direct link to one‘s own memory.
Symbolically, the mass of food shown represents a desire for more and questions our current consumer behaviour with regard to abundance. The exaggeratedly staged form metaphorically refers to the function and effect of advertising and social media.
The idea of the series is based on format specifications set by social media applications.
With the Pasta Towers, I am referring to the Instagram Story format with 1080 x 1920 pixels. In order to post a photo in full format without cropping or framing it, it must be created in this format. This circumstance changes our viewing
habits and the way we photograph from landscape to portrait format. The motif - a plate of pasta - looks very small in this format. The motif must therefore be adapted to the format so that the object can be presented in a sufficiently large format.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Apart from the colour of the tablecloth and a few small colour and contrast adjustments, the pictures are unedited. On a photographic level, I would describe the series as a staging. But I also utilise a peculiarity that is only possible in photography. Capturing a moment, the documentary aspect of photography. With the production of the object, a sculpture made of perishable material, it is only present at the time the photograph is taken. Afterwards, the sculpture destroys itself by rotting or, in my case, I ate it. What remains is the photograph as a testimony to its existence. For me, it is a documentary staging of a sculpture that can only be captured by means of photography.
WHAT WE EAT IS ULTIMATELY CONNECTED WITH OUR MEMORIES
BACKGROUND, CONTEXT AND RECEPTION
CHOICE OF MOTIF
For the object scaled to 9:16, I deliberately used a dish that is anchored in the collective memory worldwide and can be identified and read by many people at first glance. To keep access easy, I used two of the best-known pasta variations: Carbonara and Bolognese. For the third motif, I used my own favourite variant: spaghetti with ketchup, salami and Edam cheese, which stems from my own childhood memories.
EXHIBITION
at ROSA KARL 1020 Vienna 06/2023
group show “SCHOENHEITSFILTER TOTALOPTIMIEREN UNS“ with Olivier Hölzl, Andreas Nader, Kathi Power und Marcel Koehler.
The works show how the use of beauty filters can lead to a distorted perception of reality, how we allow ourselves to be influenced by social media without realising it. The exhibited pieces challenge us to become more aware of our own perception.
